The long established Devon agency, now celebrating its first decade of working with local providers of farmhouse and rural accommodation, has identified these locations on the basis of their eco friendliness and standards of comfort. They are where guests can eat delicious fresh local produce and share in the owners’ passion for their work on the land and their green credentials.
Many members of Cartwheel’s roster have been awarded Green Tourism Business Awards for their dedication in preserving the South West countryside and hosts are always pleased to provide local knowledge and information to encourage guests to get the most out of their stay.
The GTBS is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK. Originally developed in partnership with Visit Scotland, it is now the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain, through the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT). “GTBS provides excellent value for money to a wide range of tourism firms with first class environmental advice and auditing. Satisfaction rates of certified firms are very high and drop out rates low, both for the smallest of tourism firms and increasingly at corporate level.” Xavier Font, ICRT.
One property that caught our eye was the Bovisand Lodge beachside holiday park which has been run by the same family for 50 years. This Visit Britain 4 star facility boasts a David Bellamy Gold Award and a Silver Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme. This family run property sits in a wooded valley which runs down to a safe, sandy beach which overlooks the Plymouth Breakwater and across to the Cornish coast. The Devon coastal path is right on the doorstep and guests can enjoy miles of clifftop walks in either direction.
There is no club house or organised entertainment as the owners know that the customers it attracts prefer to do their own thing. As a result, most of their guests tend to be regular visitors who come year after year for the tranquil, quality environment and the spectacular views.
